From menstruation through menopause—and all the decades in between—your body goes through remarkable change. And few providers can help you navigate these changes as well as the gynecologists from University of Iowa Health Care.

Our team is here to help you:

  • Understand which of your body’s changes are a normal part of development or aging, and anticipate future changes
  • Learn how to prevent or detect problems ranging from yeast infections to breast cancer
  • Discuss and manage your sexual and reproductive health
  • Determine which tests or treatments you might need when you develop new or unusual gynecologic symptoms

When you choose one of our gynecologists, you’ll have an expert you can count on to keep you healthy. And you’ll have a partner you can trust to discuss intimate topics and make very personal health care decisions.

Gynecology services for every stage of life

The gynecologic care and advice you may need will vary throughout your life. For example, you will want one type of support when you first become sexually active. And you will need another type of support when you start having hot flashes.

No matter what stage of life you’re in, you can turn to us for routine or complex care. We offer:

  • Annual gynecologic exams, including Pap smears and breast exams
  • Referrals for preventive screenings such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and DEXA scans (bone density tests)
  • Family planning services, such as contraception (birth control) counseling
  • Nonsurgical treatments for bothersome vaginal bleeding, bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and more
  • Surgical treatments for conditions such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids
  • Menopause symptom management
  • Sexual health services for problems like low sex drive and painful sex

Convenient, one-stop gynecologic care

Our goal is to make it easier for you to get the care you need, when you need it.

The full range of treatments

Our gynecologists can provide nearly any treatment you may need, including most types of gynecologic surgery.

So, if you ever need a surgical procedure like a hysterectomy, you may not need to see a separate surgeon. Instead, your regular gynecologist—who knows you and your health history—may be able to perform the procedure.

In-office procedures

We can perform many diagnostic tests and other procedures right in the clinic. This helps reduce the number of specialists you’ll see and the number of visits you’ll need to make.

Our in-office services include:

  • Colposcopy: If a preventive screening test, like a Pap smear or HPV test, finds abnormal cells (dysplasia), we offer colposcopy. This test closely examines your cervix, vagina, and vulva for cancerous or pre-cancerous tissue.
  • Endometrial biopsy: We remove a small piece of tissue from the lining of your uterus to look for signs of certain medical conditions.
  • Hysteroscopy: We use a special tool to look at your cervix and see inside your uterus.
  • Long-acting reversible birth control placement: We can insert and remove reversible contraceptive options. These include birth control implants (Nexplanon) and intrauterine devices (IUDs).
  • Ultrasounds: This imaging procedure uses sound waves to create pictures of your reproductive organs. All our ultrasound images are reviewed by gynecologic ultrasound experts instead of general radiologists. They have the skills and experience needed to identify even the most subtle signs of gynecologic conditions.
  • Vulvar biopsy: We take tissue samples from your vulva and/or vagina to check for cancer or other conditions.

A collaborative, comprehensive approach

Your gynecologist can provide many of the services or treatments you’ll ever need. However, there may be times when they need to partner with other OBGYN experts.

Our team includes specialists with advanced training in certain gynecologic conditions and treatments. For example, our pelvic floor physical therapists offer specialized treatments for pelvic floor disorders.

Depending on your needs, you also have access to:

  • Gynecologic cancer specialists who diagnose and treat cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, and more
  • Family planning specialists who specialize in contraception, miscarriage management, and complex family planning matters
  • Maternal-fetal medicine specialists who care for women whose pregnancies and/or deliveries are considered high risk
  • Obstetricians who provide routine pregnancy care and oversee vaginal and cesarean births
  • Reproductive endocrinologists who diagnose and treat infertility in women and men
  • Urogynecologists who specialize in conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence
